SPELD Victoria - Support for Dyslexia and other Learning Difficulties
Tutoring at the SPELD
Student Learning Centre
The Student Learning Centre provides individual tutoring using high-quality intervention learning programs for students who are struggling in literacy or maths, as well as those who have been diagnosed with Dyslexia and/or other Specific Learning Disabilities.

Special Educational Teachers work with students on a sessional basis.

Teachers employed at the Student Learning Centre:
  • have special education qualifications
  • are experienced in teaching students with Dyslexia and other Learning Difficulties/Disabilities
  • are able to apply on-going assessment and reporting practices
  • hold current registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching
  • maintain a high level of professional development
  • maintain a current police record check

The program also includes working in partnership with parents and the school. It includes regular parent/teacher interviews and half-yearly written reports, so there is consistent feedback on progress.

For students, the key intervention features of programs are:
  • assessment and analysis of literacy and numeracy problems using a range of formal and informal measures
  • structured, sequenced sessions and opportunities for repetition and practice of skills, including utilising assistive technologies such as software programs
  • student engagement in the acquisition of literacy and numeracy through the appropriate selection of teaching strategies and resource materials
  • modelling specific strategies to students
  • maintaining the motivation and confidence of students to persist with learning by giving positive feedback regarding performance and achievement
  • monitoring student performance and teaching practices on an on-going basis
